About Massimo Clerico
Massimo Clerico produces his wines exclusively from grapes grown in his own vineyards, most of which surround the family home and cantina on a hill overlooking the town of Lessona.
Massimo Clerico produces his wines exclusively from grapes grown in his own vineyards, most of which surround the family home and cantina on a hill overlooking the town of Lessona.
Beginning in 2015, Massimo made the judicious decision to separate out the oldest vines in the Gaja vineyard, which are planted in much darker and more iron-rich sand than those whose fruit is blended into the basic Lessona bottling. The iron makes itself immediately apparent in the wine’s profile, which is simultaneously firmer and more dynamic than the basic Lessona, with an almost brooding minerality underpinning the dense red fruit. Vigna Gaja spends four years aging in large oak casks before bottling, and only about 2,000 bottles per vintage are produced.
